Axle Description
The 9 1/4" axle housing consists of a cast iron differential carrier center
section with axle tubes extending from the center section sides. The axle tubes
are pressed into the differential housing and then welded into position to form
a one-piece axle housing.
The differential case is a one-piece design.
The differential pinion mate shaft is retained by a threaded pin. Differential
bearing preload and ring gear backlash are set by a collapsible spacer (crush
sleeve) on the pinion.
An option Trac-Lok limited slip differential
uses a one-piece differential case, the same internal components as the standard
open differential, and an additional pair of clutch disc packs to transfer wheel
torque under poor traction conditions.

Additional features:
- A vent hose relieves pressure from lubricant vaporization and internal
expansion.
- Axle shafts are semi-floating and retained by C-clips in the differential
side gears.
- A stamped steel cover on the rear of the center section can be removed
for inspection and maintenance.
- A metal date tag with the gear ratio is attached to two cover bolts.
- A RWAL brake speed sensor is attached to the upper front of the center
section.
- A RWAL brake exciter ring is pressed onto the ring gear flange.
