FLOOD STUCK !!!

Although I'm reluctant to admit it, I actually drove into this mess. This is in Oakland, N.J. and is actually a flooded river. The waters crested at 53" before draining out of the truck and leaving a 1/4" of muck on my upholstery. It happened about 9:00 PM on the night that Hurricane Floyd hit the East Coast. I had driven through this area 2-3 hours previously and there was only 12" of water. When I came back for another look and turned onto this street, there water was INSTANTLY flowing over the hood (just like driving into a swimming pool). I didn't (couldn't ?) let off the gas, and ended up driving the "Silver Submarine" about 150' until she finally sucked water in through the intake and died. That's all she wrote. They rescued me in a boat (the current was too strong to wade or swim out) and pulled the poor old Ram out 3 days later. Insurance totaled her with less than 10,000 miles on her. I recovered all the accessories (except the CD player) plus 7 packs of cigarettes from a new carton (which were still dry and floating in the cab !!) Next time, I'll stay home (maybe). |
